These pictures were taken from 4-7 May 1999 in Las Vegas, Nevada. I was there with my mother and brother to do sightseeing. You may click any of the pictures to see a larger version.
Photographic note: All the pictures on these pages were taken with the Epson PhotoPC 750Z digital camera. I found the solar assist feature to be particularly valuable. The solar assist uses sunlight to backlight the camera's LCD so that you can view it clearly in bright sunlight. Believe me, Las Vegas has plenty of that. Having a nearly pocket-sized camera was convenient. I carried the camera in its case, attached to my belt. When I walked, it wasn't a problem, but when I was running or jogging, I had to keep one hand under the bag to keep it from bouncing around.
Techie note: All of the pictures were reduced in size using the GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) on Linux. The thumbnails were saved with a compression of 0.60, and the larger pictures with a compression of 0.75.
Let's start with the casinos. We stayed at the Treasure Island Hotel, and had a room on the 26th floor. Here's a view from the window, facing south down Las Vegas Boulevard, also known as the strip.
Just down the street is the Mirage. An artificial volcano in front of the hotel goes off every fifteen or so minutes in the evenings. The Mirage is where the magic duo of Siegfried and Roy performs. It also has an area where you can see their famous white tigers.
Farther down the Strip is Caesar's Palace. If you've never been to Las Vegas before, you have no idea how big these places are. The size of the casinos, coupled with the flat landscape and clear air, makes it seem as if everything is fairly close, but each of the buildings takes up about four city blocks. |
